Goa
Goa is a paradise for tourists. 25th addition of States to the Indian territory is Goa. It is crescent in shape. Goa is small in size with many historic forts, churches, temples, green hills and mountains, river creeks, fields and palm-fringed pearl white beaches which leave any to this place spellbound.
Goa has a long and hoary past. “Pearl of the East”, “Rome of the East” thus spoke the travellers, colonizers, poets and Evangelists over the centuries. The ancient Hindu capital of Goa was described in the 16th Century as “Golden Goa”. It is also known by the name of “Gomanchala”, “Gopakapuri”, “Govapuri”,” Gomantak” in bygone days.
On 30th May 1987, Goa was conferred Statehood. The Goa state with scenic beauty and chequered historical background offers a host of attractions for holiday makers and connoisseurs of art.
Goa is a part of the Indian subcontinent overlaid with much Hindu culture. The Goan government has banned nudism on the fabled white-sandy beaches. All vantage points on the Calangute, Anjuna, Baga and Vagator beaches have all major tourists draw billboards, proclaiming “Nudism is not allowed and violators are liable to punishment”. Even though, Nudism remains a common feature of the beaches at South of Colva and at North of Vagator but no longer at Calangute or Baga.
Food and Drink
Areas which have been influenced by the Hindus, Christians, Muslims and Portuguese, is the culinary art of Goa. This offers a delicious range of cuisines which makes the use of the best seafood in India. There are several local specialities which include Port Vindaloo, Goan sausage or Chourisso. The pig’s liver dish is known as “Sarpotel”. “Xacuti” is a chicken or meat dish. Seafood of all types is of course, plentiful and fresh. “Bangra” is a Goan mackerel, prepared in a variety of delicious ways. “sanna” are rice “cupcakes” soaked in palm toddy before cooking. Variety of special Christmas sweets called “Dadol”, “Bebinca” and so on. “Moira Kela” are banana-like fruit from Moira village in Bardez. To complement their exotic fare, the Goans are adept at brewing their own liquor called “Feni”, normally made out of the coconut or cashew apple.
